Kongesporet 2013 and Narrow/Wide chainring follow up.

Today is Tuesday. My bottom only hurts a little now.
Sunday evening it was a bit worse. Crossing the finish line Sunday afternoon it didn't really feel that bad. The pain came creeping in after I'd relaxed for a couple of hours.

Sunday morning 9 a.m. I was ready on the start line of the inaugural version of Kongesporet (Kings trail) 2013.
For the last two months I've been training to start racing again, planning to debut in the Slushcup in November. Despite that plan I was ready on the start line of Kongesporet this Sunday. Thinking it might be a good opportunity to test my fitness and finally do some racing again. I'd signed up for the marathon distance of 105 km, as the shorter distances of 42 and 21 km are for kids and rookies.
I've ridden marathon races before, but it's been a couple of years, so I didn't really know what pace to set. But I had a plan.

Race Face Single Ring Narrow/Wide - initial impressions

Are the XX1 style narrow/wide chainrings worth the money?
The answer pretty much comes down to their ability to keep the chain from falling off, when running without a chainguide.
I thought it might be interesting to isolate the narrow/wide effect, too see what it really does.

Narrow/wide and standard version of the Race Face Single Ring.

I've been riding a standard Race Face 34T Single Ring since spring, and have so far put 1400 km on it.
Today I changed to the 34T Narrow/Wide version of the Race Face Single Ring.

Extending wires - how to.

At some point, we have probably all been in a situation where we had to extend the wire of a nut to prevent the carabiner being loaded over an edge. This is not recommended by the manufacturer of the nuts, but in real life you have to improvise from time to time. I have always extended wires by larks footing another wire. But is this assumption correct?

My traditional way of extending wires.

Based on the assumption that threading nylon or dyneema through the wire would be a bad idea.

Thinking this would be a bad idea? (photo: DMM)

DMM did some testing on the subject. The conclusion is a bit surprising to me. A basket hitched 8mm Dyneema being stronger than the larks footed wire on wire.

Check the video for details. DMM test video and conclusions.

Multi purpose equipent - Emergency Powder Basket

An old saying goes something like this: "All gear carried in the backcountry should fulfill more than one purpose."
On a recent ski mountaineering trip in Austrias Ötztal valley I lost a skipole basket on our attempt to climb Karlespitze. Skiing down an unknown, steep and narrow snow ramp at the end of our rappels, in the increasing darkness, with only one functional pole wasn't very intriguing to say the least.
So something had to be done - fast.

The solution was simple and effective. A Dynafit skicrampon on top of my belay device fits perfectly on the tip of the pole. A piece of cord, which you always should carry, tied to the pole handle held it on securely. I safely skied down, and and used the setup successfully for the remaining two days ski out of the valley.
So there you have it: The emergency powder basket.

(Rare) Dynafit Failure.

Upon disassembling my Vertical ST bindings for the first time i noticed a small crack in the side of the compensation plate. After taking the binding apart, the compensation plate was indeed in two pieces.
The bindings are from april 2009, has seen probably between 40 and 50 days of use. The use they have seen have been everything from regular back-country touring to icy in bound skiing to expedition use involving multiple plane and mule rides.
In other words, they've been banged around quite a bit.
I didn't notice anything unusual skiing the binding a couple of days ago, so I don't really know how long it's been broken.
I will of course be replacing the broken part, even though the binding seems to be skiable.
Have anybody else seen or heard of this mode of failure.
I should state that I haven't disassembled the binding before, hence I don't think over tightening the top plate screws (at least not by me) could be the reason for the failure.
Enjoy the spring.
